Welcome to the World, Little One! I've had the pr Welcome to the World, Little One!

I've had the privilege of supporting this beautiful babe's mama throughout her pregnancies. She is a two-time member of the 4% Club. This was her second breech babe. Approximately 3-4% of full-term babies present breech, which means they are head up and feet or bottom down. We tried everything to flip this lil guy: Spinning Babies exercises and stretches, chiropractic, Dancing for Birth classes, physiologic lifestyle changes to promote optimal positioning (like forward leaning exercises, pelvic openers, birth ball bouncing, massage, etc.) You name it, we tried it!

He was snug as a bug and breech was his position of choice. So, we regrouped and rallied around our breech babe. While a cesarean birth was not her first choice, she surrendered to her body in ways she did not plan. Her strength and grace are beautiful examples of remaining soft enough to bend, yet not break.

As a birth doula, I am grateful to Kootenai Health for honoring all births, all mothers, and all ways that babies choose to enter the world. Together we make a difference!

Welcome to the World, Ezra Lewis! You are fiercely loved!!

Let's be real. A female's body will change more in Let's be real. A female's body will change more in 9 months than a male's body will in his lifetime. Let that sink in!

Along with those changes comes a lot of body fluids. lol

How do you tell if your water broke??
1. If you experience a sudden release of fluid, or even a slow leak, it could be your waters breaking,
2. Some feel a distinct popping sensation.
3. If your water has indeed broken, there will be a slow continuous flow.

If you have concerns or questions, call your care provider. They'll be happy to help you!

I am a doula. It's my desire to help you prepare f I am a doula. It's my desire to help you prepare for your birth in mind, body, and spirit.

Preparing for birth is as much a brain train as it is a body conditioning. Coping mechanisms and reduced pain perception lead to a more positive birth experience for both parents. Movement is an incredible comfort measure and it creates space, allowing for optimal fetal positioning. These are holistic, evidence-based approaches that empower individuals with skills for birth and beyond.

Choose a Gentle Birth workshop to prepare for a positive birth experience by focusing on mental wellness and stress reduction alongside physical preparation through techniques like mindfulness, hypnosis, and sports psychology. These classes aim to empower you with tools to manage fear and pain, help you communicate effectively with your birth partner and medical team, and promote a more physiological and less traumatic birth experience. This "brain training" approach combines evidence-based methods to reduce stress and pain perception, and there's even an app for ongoing practice.
 @gentlebirthofficial GentleBirth

Choosing Dancing For Birth™ classes is beneficial because the it teaches specific movements that promote optimal fetal positioning, which can lead to a shorter and easier birth. These classes help with labor pain management, reduce the need for pain medication, and lower the cesarean rate for participants. Additionally, they offer physical fitness, emotional and physical support for both prenatal and postpartum mothers, and create a strong community of support.

After childbirth, the body needs rest, nourishment After childbirth, the body needs rest, nourishment, and care. As a postpartum doula, the first food I bring to my birth clients is a simplified version of Nepali Rice Pudding. Its warming spices and simple ingredients are gentle on digestion. This particular recipe of Nepali Rice Pudding helps to rebuild blood by providing essential nutrients through its ingredients. It is energy-rich, with rice and coconut sugar offering carbohydrates and minerals, milk providing protein and calcium, and spices like ginger and black pepper stimulating circulation and supporting the body's healing processes. This combination of gentle, nutrient-dense food is intended to be easy to digest and nurturing for a recovering postpartum body.

You've determined that labor has indeed started... You've determined that labor has indeed started...NOW WHAT??

If you are wanting a natural childbirth, stay home for as long as you can before going to your chosen birth place. (If you are planning a hospital birth, you will begin your birth timeline as soon as you arrive. We'll talk about why this is important in another post.)

Here are few tips for coping with early labor:

💦 HYDRATE + NOURISH - During early labor, it's essential to conserve your energy. Take this important time to rest, relax, and find comfortable positions to ease any discomfort.
💫 DISTRACT + REFOCUS - Consider watching a movie, reading a book, doing light household chores (bake a birthday cake!), or going on a leisurely walk to keep your mind occupied. Gentle dancing is especially helpful.
💞 COMFORT + CONNECT - A heating pad, practicing relaxation techniques like visualization, or receiving massages from a supportive partner can help calm your mind and body.

Your birth may be a marathon or a sprint. Prepare to pace yourself. Taking extra measures during early labor can give you the strength you'll need for active labor and delivery.

Childbirth is a natural process. Your body knows w Childbirth is a natural process. Your body knows what to do! As your body and your baby prepare for birth, common signs begin to appear:

💧increased discharge
💩loose or more frequent bowel movements
⚡low back and/or pelvic pain
💫increased Braxton Hicks contractions
🩸mucus plug or bloody show
🎭shifting emotions

Because birth is not linear and there is no magic formula we can apply to all human bodies' experiences, you may experience all, only some, or none of these common signs. I encourage you to lean into your own intuition, Mama. Listen to your body. Honor your gut instincts.

Once contractions have started coming regularly, l Once contractions have started coming regularly, labor will progress, and the birth of your baby will be certain. So, how will you know if labor has really started?

What's the 5-1-1 of childbirth??

5️⃣ - Contractions are 5 MINUTES APART from the start of one contraction to the start of the next.
1️⃣ - Contractions are lasting 1 MINUTE IN LENGTH.
1️⃣ - Contractions are CONSISTENT FOR 1 HOUR, 5 minutes apart, lasting 1 minute in length.

As your body and your baby get closer to birth, pr As your body and your baby get closer to birth, practice contractions called Braxton Hicks may occur more frequently. What are Braxton Hicks contractions? They are sporadic contractions and relaxation of the uterine muscle. Sometimes, they are referred to as prodromal or “false labor" pains. It is believed they start around 6 weeks gestation but usually are not felt until the second or third trimester of the pregnancy.

So, how will you know when the sensations you're feeling are no longer practice contractions, or Braxton Hicks?

TIME THEM!

Start from the beginning of one contraction to the beginning of the next. Note the time in between. Using an app is an easy way to track and measure the frequency of contractions. Try not to obsess over them! Unless things are changing rapidly, time for about 10 minutes every hour. Then forget the timer, and just focus on the contractions (or providing good support, Partner!)

I recommend the GentleBirth Contraction Timer. Check it out on the GentleBirth Blog. Available at the iPhone App Store and Google Play.
