A Mama Blessing stems from a Navajo tradition that has been adopted throughout the world by many different cultures and religions. A Mama Blessing is all about nurturing and connecting heart to heart with the mother. Filling her cup so it overflows with love and confidence as she awaits the impending birth of her baby. We want to celebrate and encourage this transition in a woman’s life!

This is also a time for gratitude and honor for the female body, the amazing miracle of carrying, birthing, and sustaining a baby’s life after birth. This ceremony is intended to bring strength and belief to the mother in her body’s ability to birth her baby.

The difference between this Mama Blessing and a baby shower is that the focus is on the mother, a type of ceremony to mark this rite of passage in her life, in contrast to a baby shower that focuses on the baby and aspects of caring for a baby after delivery.

In our day and age, we lack ritual and moments to tell other women what we admire and love about them. It is important to come together to connect and encourage each other free of distraction. We want to be inspirational, loving, and authentic to help prepare the mama for birth and welcoming her precious baby into her family.

I'm also a homeschooling mama of six: four are grown-up and graduated, and my two youngest are in high school. I have seven baby grands, which promotes me to Grana. Before I was a mama, I was a preschool teacher, summer camp counselor, daycare provider, and Early Childhood Development student. I'm a DONA certified birth doula, Newborn Mothers Collective postpartum doula, Dancing for Birth™ instructor, and GentleBirth™ educator. I owned a mommy and me fitness franchise for over a decade, empowering and encouraging mamas in all stages of motherhood. I have a passion for mothers and their incredible journey. MOTHERHOOD...ahhhh. I’ll remind you that those little people that come with the job are awesome creatures. They’re constantly teaching us, stretching us, challenging us, and unconditionally loving us through this great experiment called motherhood. Those first borns should get a special medal for being our guinea pigs. Yet, just when we think we have it all figured out, those caboose babies sneak a ride on the soul-train and shake-up the whole place. Gotta love those babes! All that to say, babies are wonderful. The kids they grow into are pretty cool. Even the teens are quite incredible, especially at helping us put feet to the fire we’ve been preaching for the past decade or so. It all comes full-circle when our chicklets are launched and come back to the nest with new babies. The fun, mostly the love, is never-ending.

Feet are foundational!! Children's shoes are so important for their growth. Some studies suggest that your child’s gait is fully formed by age three, even though the bones of the feet continue developing until they are 18-20yo.

Children who have just begun walking should wear soft-soled shoes, or better yet - go barefoot when it's safe to do so! The kinds of shoes that you should avoid for newly walking children include:

👣Flip flops
👣Shoes with Velcro® straps
👣Crocs™ (or other similar shoes that don’t stay on securely)
👣Shoes that serve no function other than fashion
👣Shoes with any type of elevated heel (even a small one)

While going barefoot is good for a child’s foot development, you may wish to have your child wear shoes to prevent injuries to their foot, such as stubbed toes, splinters, or broken toenails. If your child has suffered from any of these types of injuries, especially on a frequent basis, they may be safer wearing appropriate shoes even when indoors.

Measure your child's foot every 2 months to assess for growth. A properly fit shoe should have at least 1/2 - 1 inch of wiggle room.

How do you know if a shoe fits properly? Not good: Pressing thumb on the shoe to see how much room there is. The problem is that kids retract their toes by reflex, so the foot is rolled under. The better solution is to place one hand on the top front of the shoe so that child can’t draw the toes up. Then, with the other hand, check the space at the heel.
